THEME
Today, we face urgent global challenges—climate change, food insecurity, and water scarcity or excess—that demand a transformation of our settlements. Cities, towns, and villages are being reshaped with blue and green infrastructures and with ambitions for carbon-neutral, even carbon-positive, solutions. Yet while the planning and design of such infrastructures present formidable challenges, there is much to learn from the past. Premodern, integrative methods provide a rich legacy of strategies that can inspire new approaches to building more sustainable settlements.
Since the advent of the Holocene, human survival and prosperity have depended on these life-giving infrastructures which enabled adaption to diverse and often harsh environments, making long-term settlement possible. These sophisticated practices and infrastructures were devised communally through knowledge sharing and practices well before industrialization for cultivating crops, managing water, and shaping settlement patterns that secured both resilience and continuity.
Collectively sustained settlements emerged as the unifying outcome of these infrastructures. They were not merely sites where agricultural surpluses were stored or water distributed but the very stages where daily life unfolded. Fields, orchards, granaries, cisterns, markets, canals, baths, public spaces, and dwellings functioned as interdependent components of a socio-ecological whole. Urban layouts wove these elements into coherent frameworks that shaped both the physical form of settlements and the rhythms of social practice. In doing so, they created technical, ecological, and social foundations of durable habitation.
Revisiting these premodern models underscores that the future of sustainable urbanism depends not only on technological innovation but also on the careful recovery and adaptation of collective knowledge that historically integrated people, place, and resources into a resilient whole.
This Conference will explore:
• Agricultural systems and the countryside-city relationship as models for resilient and equitable food networks.
• Water infrastructures for household, civic, and agricultural use, offering insights into climate-adaptive resource management.
• Architectural and planning strategies that linked environmental adaptation with urban form and daily practices.
